So I'm guessing you wouldn't want to hear about running the 1976
Watkins Glen Vintage Grand Prix in a an Allard J2-X with a firewall-
mounted fuel pump bracket fabbed on the spot from a cardboard
box and two rolls of corvette tape, using a handful of nylon cable
ties for hose clamps?? (We finished under our own power, which was
more than the factory-maintained Ferraris or birdcage did...)

(Which was not quite so insane as replacing the head gasket on Ed
Shelton's MGB in his driveway at two in the morning in a pouring
North Texas Thunderboomer. It wasn't until the next morning that we
found out that a funnel cloud had gone apparently RIGHT overhead and
touched down about two miles away. Oops. We won the rally, though.)

If you can't fix the gear with a Gerbertool, a tin can lid, and a
chunk of wire, you're not ready to go into the field.
