Aperture and Lightroom can both use your files in the file system
where YOU put them. They then manage the meta-data themselves and
store that. I don't know what Lightroom does but the Aperture data is
available in a "package" that can be completely decomposed. It may be
difficult to decipher but it's there.

I have not tried this on Lightroom. They have to have a cross-platform
solution where Apple can focus on what Mac OS X does.
