I wouldn't say that you were wrong.  You stopped when asked to stop.  Since
it's a seminar about photography, I wouldn't think it the least bit odd for
a photographer to have a camera and to use it.

I probably wouldn't have taken pictures.  Taking pictures removes you
slightly from what's going on.  It's hard to be both a participant and a
photographer.  Not impossible, but hard.  So I would have left the camera
put away unless it was hands-on time and everybody were taking pictures.
But that's me.  Doesn't mean it's right for anybody else.  And I wouldn't
have objected to another participant taking pictures.
