Hi, Jayanand - It's basically the same in the Christian religion - to
show humility. It does occur at other times of the year and other
celebrations but is mainly at Easter on Maundy Thursday, or Holy
Thursday, because according to the Bible, Jesus washed his disciples'
feet after the Last Supper. In many Protestant churches women take
part, too, but the Catholic church decreed that it could be men only,
following the example in the Bible.
