According to the OED the first documented use of this form in English
dates from 1588 and was originally used to refer to Roman Catholics.
Given the religious climate at the time, I don't think it was used
affectionately.  The first use listed in the OED applying in this
context is Trollope in 1862 when he refers to "the Hebrew Persuasion".
I don't have the context so I don't know if it was derogatory or not.
