I did something like this except I went with 50% Gray for my new layer and 
used a wide soft brush to burn the background in. My 1st cut is reposted at 
the Leica-gallery now.

I also brought the image into PS again and burned the background in even 
more. Still playing with this one.

First method seems (to me) easier at this point.
