Greg.. this one is also a winner.  But I must ask about the softness that I
see in this shot as well..

Is it possible that you are oversaturating your scanner sensor?  Don't ask
me what this means in terms of digi-tech-speak.  I just get the feeling that
the sensor is being overloaded and in being overloaded, is dropping out
certain data or adding in some while it tries to overcome its overload.

Does your scanner have a speed select for scanning?  Can you slow it down?
Have you viewed a histogram of the image?   Is it all crowded up at the
bottom or ( more likely )  top end?

I know the lens you are using is sharp, so it must be the scanner operation
...

Have you tried scanning a color slide?  What results do you get there?
