Subject: [Leica] DSLR choice

My daughter is shopping for a first-time DSLR in the low-end of the price 
range. Her previous experience is with film cameras -- she has a BA in 
Photography.  The Nikon D-50 seems attractive for the price.  Does anyone 
here have experience with it.  I'm especially interested in performance at 
ISO 800-1600 (specifically, noise levels).
