Quite often, differences between solid state amplifiers and tube amplifiers are scientifically measurable. The amplification curve (x-axis = input voltage, y-axis = output voltage) of tube amps are often far from linear, and results in significant amount of harmonic distortion. While not scientifically accurate, the effects are audible, and often considered pleasant. As for the $50/ft speaker cables, I must say that its effect was intelligently designed.
