We had high hopes that getting out in the rural areas would mean getting away from the air pollution, but it seemed just as bad in the country. People there talked about how much worse it is the summer and said that autumn is actually the clearest time of the year. We did have a few clear days after rain and wind blew the smog away, but I have lots of photos where you can't see more than a block because of the thick haze. And it's not fog - it burns your throat and eyes. Many of the people who worked in the streets or rode bikes wore surgical masks. It was worse in Shanghai than Beijing, though.
