Negs can be scanned as easily as slides, B/W or color.  For color I find it
easier to scan slides because the slide gives me a better color reference.

Unless extensive work went in to making the print, it's better to scan the
neg or slide (assuming the neg can be held flat) instead of the print.  The
print is one step removed from the original.
