Richard, the 400mm f/6.8 isn't slow to focus, particularly with the SL's viewscreen. For this particular photo the bird was within range for about 2 seconds and in that time I raised the camera, set exposure using the SL's meter, focussed and pushed the button. When the SL's mirror flopped back down the bird was gone and my first thought was "Did that really happen? Compose, focus, meter, expose in just seconds?!?". Then I looked at the shutter speed: 1/60 sec. My second thought was "no way is that going to work". A responsive camera makes all the difference.
