In the 19th and early 20th century, poor Appalachian girls would do the same
thing but they got their belladonna from a natural source, the thornapple
plant which is a weed growing here in waste places.  The only problem was
they could not go out in full sunlight until it wore off.

The leaf was crushed with a little water and a few drops squeezed into each
eye.

Ah, beauty......
