Yes, I have that little icon that tells you that you can unplug the 
hardware safely, but that is only for hardware that is not "plug and 
play".  All of my external hard drives are plug and play and I shouldn't 
have to use the icon for them.  BUT I didn't disconnect the hard drive.  It 
is still connected to the USB port.  I just closed Windows Explorer and the 
next time I opened it, the hard drive was blank.  Using Computer Management 
after I transferred the files, it first showed that 250GBs of the hard 
drive were used and then the next time I looked only 71MBs were used.   The 
rest was empty.  :-(  I've turned everything off now and am going swimming.
