I've never bought a prebuilt external drive; all my externals are
internal-spec drives in standard external enclosures. Unless the
Maxtor externals use a proprietary cable or one that's permanently
attached to the drive (which I cannot see them doing) you should be
able to pick up the cable at any computer store or online at any of
the mail houses for only a few bucks. I just bought three new
internal ata133 round cables for backups... $5.99 each, and several
spare USB's to go with another case/drive setup. They were like $4
each. (whenever I buy a new drive or case I pick up at least one
spare cable; the ones that come with aren't always top quality.)
