All the center area around Sol-Atocha-Embajadores-Opera-Recoletos-Gran
via-Alonso Martinez-Bilbao is the best area having the old city and
most of the museums, cinemas, restaurants, shops and places to go by
night (like Huertas and Sta. Ana).

Worth a visit El Escorial, Alcal? de Henares, Toledo, Segovia,
Avila,Sig?enza and Guadalajara all of them well communicated by train
or bus about a 1 hour ride the most of them, 2 hours maximum.

Hope this helps.
