I'm taking the Canon digitals to use during the medical clinics which will begin just over a week from now. But I'm also taking my M7, Noctilux, and Summilux. I never thought I'd be carrying film through airports again but this time I'll be away from any type of electrical connections for over a week when I'm out in a rural community with a family. I'm so afraid that my batteries won't last until I can recharge them again, that I'm going through the hassle of taking rolls of actual film through airport security!! My Epson P2000 is fantastic but it won't run indefinitely without electricity and it only holds 40GB. I plan to take more than 40GB of photos before I get back to electricity. The reason that I'm carrying a film camera has nothing to do with quality. I still believe that it's all about the image and not the equipment. I can do what I want with digital but I do need access to electricity to make use of anything digital. The disadvantages of carrying film are that I have to get the rolls of film through the airport without sending them through the x-ray machines. That's a challenge! Then I have to carry all of that film in my backpack as I hike for miles and miles on a "short walk" that I've been promised will lead to a wonderful remote village and family. The film can be pushed within reason but I have to be sure and mark each roll for later development. Then I have to carry all of the film back out and worry the whole time that it will get too hot or too wet or just lost or stolen. When I do get the film safely home, I still have to develop it, edit it, mount it, scan it and add it to the digital files that I already have. I'm all for arranging solar recharging for digital cameras but that doesn't seem to be coming anytime soon. I've tried all of the solar rechargers and only wasted my money. If anybody has any suggestions, I'm listening! I leave on Friday and am carrying in a Lowe backpack and a Tamrac rolling strongbox: A Canon IDMarkII, Canon D10, several Canon L lenses, Leica R lenses with adapters: R19/2.8; R85/1.4; R100/2.8 Macro and quite a few memory cards. A Leica M7 and 35/1.4 and 50/1.0; 30 rolls of TMax 400 film.
