Marc, an automatic transmission is mighty handy when you've got 5,000+ lb of horse and trailer stuck to the rear of your truck. Sometimes there are more important things to think about than shifting gears, like keeping the horses from getting injured or keeping the trailer from driving the truck. This is especially true when there are small passengers who also demand attention. These passengers also prefer the smooth shifts of an auto to the uneven accelleration typical of the manual tranny, particularly in mountainous terrain; it can make the difference between an enjoyable trip and stopping to empty the barf bucket.
