prof.
As some may know that I used to be a former Yalie a
few years ago. It was not my kind of place being a
middle class kid in the middle of yuppie land up the
waazoo (and yes I do shoot Leica but not for the
status symbol shebang) like the way Tom Wolfe
describes it. The only memories I have of the place
are the art library and the two fabulous art museums.
I hope that you can find a ton of wonderful Leica
shots for your film, Karen! I don't recommend shooting
on campus but walking onto the NH Green or off campus
into the ghetto. There are some harrowing moments and
I regret that I didn't get into photography until
after I graduated from Yale (and could afford cameras)
in 2001.
I have lived in New Haven for 2 years and can
recommend the following places to eat out at:
Labibela- Ethopian food, way awesome. Very
inexpensive. The apotheosis of the offbeat crowd, like
me!
Istanbul Cafe- Way dope food quality. I really dig
Turkish food and it's the closest one can travel to
Turkey without a passport.
And YES they will make a big deal out of New Haven
pizza! And it's way overrated crap to be honest. In
fact, I STILL prefer Pizza Hut over Sally's and Pepe's
which I can roll up in a ball of grease. And the
horrible stories about the Clinton presidency visiting
the two opposing pizza places doesn't inspire in me
any hint of nostalgia.
Oh, and definitely I suspect that the Yale School of
Art is good for photography but it's mostly artsy
stuff like Justine Kurland.
I don't know any Leica dealers near New Haven but then
again, by a two hour ride from South Station to NYC
it's worth going to NYC to find Leica gear.
sincerely, Alfie
