It felt like the Middle Earth I held in my imagination. Unfortunately they cut out the two parts of the books that were my favorites - the trek across the Old Forest and the scouring of the Shire (and the dealing with Saruman.) The Old Forest I missed the most. I read it during the late summer when my father was dying. I was almost 18 and my cousin Mary (a year younger than I but who went to boarding school in the East and so was much more sophisticated and still is, married to a playwrite and living in upstate New York) gave me the first book. It was my escape from the family horrors that were playing out around me. I often read it outside during those Ohio afternoons when the sky is obscured and the long rolls of distant thunder peal across the land, the storms hidden by the humid atmosphere, their only sign being the ominous peals of thunder that were more felt than heard. Then I went off to college in the West and found a whole other world. Adam
