Historically in the technology industry, this situation is perfect for
tremendous growth. The tech industry does not WANT people to keep their
stuff for 5 years. They want people to treat their electronic devices as
commodities that will wear out. During the era when people felt compelled to
buy a new PC every 2 years, there was tremendous innovation and growth in
the PC industry. Now that the average lifetime has slowed to about 4 years,
there is less money available to invest in R&D, and the
rate of innovation has slowed a lot.

When you upgrade your G3 to a G6, think of that as you making your
contribution to Canon's R&D fund, to make sure that the G7 and G8 are as
wonderful as Canon can make them.
