Bill: If you can't find the 40mm filters and step-up rings  around the 
Internet, you might try Grimes, in Woonsocket, R.I.  He says  [see below] 
that he 
has some odd sizes in stock and also can make them.   But they ain't cheap. 
My 
Canon book definitely says the 35/2 take a 40mm filter.  Regards, bob cole 
Stocked standard sized adpaters are as inexpensive as  $25.00.
Custom made adapters are $50.00 each in  smaller sizes and $75.00 in medium 
sizes. $125.00 and up in very large size.  :
