A first cut (or cull) is easy, it's finding the winner that's difficult. I think that several people chose the wrong shot from the day. You mean you guys had these photographs from the same day and selected the other stuff? If there's a major lesson to be learned from then and now it's....... "we truly are our own worst editors!"
