The biggest factor in the decline and fall (in my opinion) being the decision to employ mercenaries to fight and maintain the empire. More like current US policy in Afghanistan than cheap goods. However, power in today's world is economic control of industries, etc., not land mass in western Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. Regards, Greg
