Well, the answer is YES, BUT.

Yes, you can use the same products gun users do.....   The barrel is either
aluminum or brass.  You probably do not need to do any disassembly, but
check the directions first.  You could also use epoxy paint that you find at
your local hardware store, using a pretty small  brush to apply the spray
paint....   Do not use the spray paint can directly.  Epoxy paint is pretty
sticky and will pronbably outlast the barrel.

The No part is that the results will be less than perfect....

To repaint the engraving... there are some stick paints that were and I
believe are still available for this task.  You have a stick of colored
paint that you rub over the engraving... the paint gets stuck in the
valleys.  You wipe off the excess on the barrel.  This works pretty well.  I
remember getting the paint from Fargo Enterprises, the guys in California
that sell repair parts for camera techs.  But they have changed names......
Find the right name, and they are on the WEB.  Paint comes in several
colors....

I have done both with some degree of success....
