A friend of mine taught me to hold the bottom plate between the the fourth
and fifth fingers of one hand, with the little "cage" that engages the
film-loading "tulip" acting as a "stop."  This works well when I remember
to do it. You've still got your thumb and index finger to push the film
leader into the tulip.
