The fixer is the killer, though: thiosulphates can pollute a water supply with only a few parts per million. Some of the more sophisticated water systems are capable of catching these and taming them but most cannot do so. In a similar vein, it is the silver effluent discharge which causes film-manufacturing plants to be regarded as Unfriendly Neighbors.
