One thing I noticed when I flew American Airlines in the past two weeks 
(two trips to Chicago) was a new announcement on the plan while 
boarding was in process - the new lines said something to the effect 
that if you're not able to lift your carryon bag into the overhead (eg, 
too heavy), then it's no longer considered a 'carryon' and must be 
checked.  I'll have to ask somebody I know at the airport what's up 
with this...
