The M camera winds plenty fast with its advance lever. I consider the M Leicavit not necessary IF (big IF) you are a right eye user and/or have normal-sized hands. If you are left-eyed or have larger hands, the baseplate winders are very nice indeed on the M. But on an old threadmount Leica -- with its rather slow knob wind -- the Leicavit speeds things up considerably and affords a better grip even for users with more normal-sized paws. I consider a Leicavit almost essential for any IIIc-IIIf-IIIg or similar Leica. They're certainly worth the $500 one often finds them selling at, and Tom Abrahamsson makes his own Rapidwinder-type design for the Barnack cameras too. For pre-war LTM Leicas, the SCNOO trigger winder is basically a Leicavit with the works partially exposed. There's also a scarce SCNOO-C for IIIc and later long-based threadmount cameras.
