In Long Beach CA, a local coffee shop fought back and won.

Even the NY Times picked up on it and published an article.
Polly's tagline became "down the street from ordinary" referring to the
ordinary coffee at Starbucks. Good stuff, good coffee.
Well, Polly's roast everyday on the premises, how can the "bucks" compete with
that! but there was more to that involved.
