In those days they were made by scraping away stuff from blackened paper or the other way around. Haven,t read the article but the choice was a coincidence. Since the flimsy glass deformed a bit in temperature shock tests it was chosen over quartz faced watches. I,m still replacing the glass yearly it scratches that easily.
