They seem to have dropped that argument, as it is obvious that such directing can and does make considerable difference to what a photograph turns out to be. Your point, that it is also dishonest, is one that is very important on several levels, and cannot be ignored. That dishonesty, of managing or directing a photograph that is presented as candid or documentary, once it seeps into the process, affects the whole enterprise, from beginning to end.
