The pronunciation of the number "4" in Chinese sounds like the word
"dead".

I don't know about the number "1" though.

"8" signifies prosperity.

8 in Japanese is "hachi", which also can be translated into about three
other words in English.

An example of their etymology, consider the Japanese and Portuguese
words for "bread" and for "thank you".
