Kip,
I have struggled to take similar images for a long time.  The best
examples I have seen are in Sexton's "Listen to the Trees". If you have
a chance, go to a gallery that handles his work and look at an original.

As to you image, I think it might have been improved by shooting a
vertical and pull in more of the dark ravines behind the white tree.

I'm a week late with this image, but a vacation to Nova Scotia 
interrupted my postings. I should catch up by Tuesday when I have that 
set of film ready to scan. Also, though I've tried to focus on b&w 
images, I was too intrigued with the variety of hues in this image not 
to have posted it:
