On this lens the R cam sets the camera body's cam follower at the 'nul' position, required for accurate stop-down metering. There's no connection between the aperture and the R cam on this lens. Some of the older R bodies need the R cam to meter accurately but with R6 and newer (don't know about R5, R-E) the cam follower rests in the 'nul' position so with these bodies the R cam is not nessesary.
