Jim,

There must be a reaction to this erosion of quality for the sake of profits. 
The answer to the problem might be the opening of niche markets, as they did 
in telecommunications and commercial aviation. But there the diffusion was 
produced by new technology. In photography it's the advantages of older technology 
highly improved that will accomplish the same thing. For example, the hybrid 
car seems to be outdistancing the pure solar cell electric motor.
