The gun Mao was talking about symbolized the armament of an army in the 
field, tanks, artillery, planes, staff officers, divisions, etc. He wasn't 
referring to handguns in the hands of civilians. Even on the Long March, he led a real 
army supplied by the USSR. It was that army that kept the Japanese off 
balance during WW II, and defeated the nationalists Chinese after WW II. Closet guns 
had nothing to do with it.
