I don't use layers that much yet.

One important detail I forgot: after you make a
selection, apply some feathering before working on it.
(Sometimes I apply it on the selection itself,
sometimes on its complement/inverse). If working with
high resolution, I use 25 or more pixels.  Feathering
has exactly the same purpose that  moving your dodging
instrument.
