<<I will be visiting New York City for the first time this fall. Where is the
New York photo district?>>

Hans,

The pro camera district in NYC is near the fashion and garment center area,
generally south of Madison Square or 23rd. St. Some call this the Flatiron
District after the building of the same name. Most of the pro camera shops are
located here, often several flights up in office buildings. Hansen, the Leica
valhalla is here as is Adorama and Duggals, the big custom processing center. B&H
Camera is a few blocks west. Walking around the district in the dusk you can
see strobe flashes coming from studio windows in lofts and office buildings.
The area is dotted with trendy expense account eateries. The majority of New
York's model agencies are located nearby. They can be found by noting the
migration paths of stunningly beautiful skinny women carrying hatboxes. Many of the
fashion photos you see in magazines are shot in Gramercy Park, an elite
private park surrounded by elegant late 19th century mansions. Gramercy Park is at
Lexington Ave. and 22st.

I had various offices in the area for about 30 years, usually within a block
of Gramercy Park. This district is one of the few places in New York where you
can walk around the streets with three Leicas hanging from your neck without
someone thinking you had ripped off a photo store or were about to catch a
flight to cover an assasination in some third world country.

I hope you enjoy your stay.
