I am a strong advocate of newspapers not allowing police to go on shopping sprees through their archives, but to not provide the courtroom with an uncropped version of the photo that ran in the paper is plain foolishness. There is nothing to be gained in terms of freedom of the press. The photo is already out in the public! They could even have the court seal the uncropped photo once it was used if they're feeling particularly paranoid. But to exercise their "freedom of the press" in that context is nonsense. It does nothing to compromise their right and ability to protect their archives from unreasonable searches and seizures. And in fact, their resistance could sever to weaken that ability in the long run.
