One is sedentary (bird photography with long lenses and projection flash) and the other is active. I usually go birding with a couple of friends (the better to locate and identify birds - the ideal number being 4 people). Nothing slows down the chase like setting up a camera and waiting for the damn bird to show itself when the rest of the group wants to be off and onto the next bird. Chasing life birds and getting that perfectly lit shot of yet another titmouse are not (for me) compatable. It just does not turn me on. I hung out recently with a guy shooting a Trogon nest. I wanted to see the male and female enter and leave the nest. While waiting, I was able to swing around and watch the various vireos, warblers, and WPs while he had to stay glued to the viewfinder to constantly monitor the nest hole. It's just a matter of taste I guess as to which is more important.. to me it's the chase and the observation of behavior, not the picture. YMMV of course. I have done some "digiscoping" of birds through my Swarovski scope using a Nikon Coolpix 995, but this has just been for I.D. purposes and have no claim to art.
