This is true, A comparison between the results of a Canon FS2710 that I
owned and the results of a Epson3200 of a friend showed me that for slide
scanning the FS2710 beats the result of the Epson 3200 flatbed scanner.
BTW I upgraded 5 days ago to the new Minolta elite scan 5400, and I'm now
in the learning/adaption process. My first impression is that it is a very
good scanner.

The resolution you need to scan at is whatever it takes to get 150 to 300
dpi at the printed size. So, if you scan a 35mm image (1x1.5 inches
roughly)
and want to print an uncropped 10x15 inch image, you need to scan at 1500
to
3000 dpi.
What I do not know is the equivalence of "dpi" between film and flatbed
scanners. I have always had the feeling that the 2800 dpi or so mid market
film scanners are better for film than the 2400 or 3200 dpi flatbeds -- but
I cannot say for sure.
I am posting this not as a final answer, but looking for confirmation from
a
scanning guru. It is a question posed as a statement.
