Yesterday I had a long conversation with a photographer named John
Isaac, who for some years was the head of photography for the U.N.

When John came to this country from India in the late 60s, he knew
nothing about photography, but at some point someone gave him a camera
and - he became an outstanding photographer, winning prizes left and
right, which lead to the U.N. job. Anyway, early in his photo life -
entirely self-taught...

"I forgot to tell you something that might interest you, since you use a
Leica. Back in 1972, I won a Leica M5 as the first prize in a photo
contest. I did not know what a leica was because I was then using a
Asahi Pentax Spotmatic camera and I thought that was the ultimate in
photography. So, when they called me to tell me that I won the first
prize and it was a Leica camera I was very disappointed and told the guy
on the phone,"couldn't you have given me a Pentax?" He laughed at me and
said well you could probably buy a few Pentaxes for the price of one
Leica".. And sure enough in 1972 I did not have any money to buy any
other lenses for the Leica other than what I had on the camera (40mm, I
think) I did trade the camera for 2 Minolta SRT 201s and a few lenses
and a flash and I still got some money back..That was my start in
Photography..."
