The issue under discussion does not question the public nature of the auction; but the underlying information which sellers must provide to the auctioneer in order to sell their items. While a buyer can choose to pay on his own terms (or not bid). A seller must give credit card (banking) data to the auctioneer so the auctioneer can collect their fees. One would hope that data would remain a bit difficult for others, outside of the auction house, to get a hold of - apparently not so.
