My first visit was as a young ltjg aboard USS Intrepid. Weather was atrocious but people so wonderful that I vowed to return. Have done so eight times. After Dublin, concentrate on the west and southwest. Drive to Killarney (Co. Kerry), jumping off spot for the Ring of Kerry. Do a jaunting cart trip up the Gap of Dunloe, then continue on the Ring. Thence to Dingle and the Dingle peninsula, out to Dunquin at the western tip - if you have the time - and a small boat to the Great Blasket Island, the westernmost bit of European land before you hit North America. North via the Cliffs of Moher. The Old Ground Hotel in Ennis is a wonderful lodging and eating haven. On north to Galway and west on the coast road via Spittal. Cashel House is a fine and lovely hotel where le grand Charles - de Gaulle - is supposed to have stayed. Again, given time, go north into County Mayo.......... But I've gone on too much. I forgot the medieval banquet at Bunratty Castle way back in Co. Clare (or is it Limerick?). Having babbled on, while Ireland's greatest charm is its people, I should add that a great part of its charm is meandering. Don't try to do too much. Relax and let people and things happen. The people and the place are absolutely made for M photography.
