Na, cross dressing doesn't work. It's who you know. I've been chased by security guards, angry sociopaths, concerned citizens who suspected me of terrorism, one old guy threw a bottle at me once, and this on the streets of NYC, in public space. Sometimes I think pointing a gun at someone is more acceptable then a camera. I suppose a gun suggests only one or two possible outcomes which are immediate and definite. A photograph suggests the unknown outcome which creates an inchoate fear.

You're right, Alistair, but it may depend even more on where you are. I
don't think Sonny would run into problems photographing kids because
everybody in his town knows him. If I'm photographing in my own small
Southern town, most people know me. In Honduras, they know and trust the
people I'm with.

My gray hair adds respectability but for a man it may just make him into a
"dirty old man!" Maybe you guys should try cross-dressing!
