This is a truly sensible comment. I agree and perhaps the Leica R
digital back may be too late. Just I wish add that in fact Kodak DCS 14
is a recently launched DSLR with 14Mp (top record) which is using Nikon
existing mount. It's too an excellent digital camera with some
recoverable defects: battery short life, too noise at 400 ASA but in
other aspects it's even better than EOS 1Ds. I have not yet tested the
Kodak but if they produced such a camera, Nikon should be able. They
have chosen other way: a smaller sized CCD. 

Leica way, a digital back, is a excellent idea. Only Leica has the
lenses with the quality for full format captors. You can too shift from
film to digital imaging in the some body, but in my modest opinion
future is digital, whatever our wishes could be, and further
developments have to be on the digital area. To check this just ask, for
some minutes, a borrowed EOS 1Ds and see your pictures on paper. First
time you cannot believe it.
