Jim,
When Leica designed the R8, they used the latest ISO standards for sync
voltage. (the new standard was lower.) Older flashes won't work. Eventually,
they went back to the older standard.
You need to get an adapter which fixes the problem. Apparently, they can
not do an internal fix. I have the same problem and have the adapter.
(Sorry, but I can;t find the part number).
