Thanks for the info.  Boy!  5 to 7 years, sounds like enough reason to buy
the MP alone.  Now if they just had not screwed with the shutter dial...

Speaking of warranties ... Frank had asked about the MP and M7 warranties a
bit ago, and I'm not sure if anyone answered. Here goes: and if you have
any
comments about warranties, please, let's agree to discuss them in a civil
manner!):

The warranties on the M7 and MP are different; here's the scoop on each:

1) In the U.S., the M7 (if imported by Leica USA) includes a standard
international two-year warranty (this also holds true for any new M6TTL or
Last M6TTL you may purchase; there are still some new ones on the market).
If you register your camera with Leica USA for the USA Passport Protection
Plan (included with the camera but only effective if you register within 30
days of purchase), the warranty will then extend to three years, and will
also include the extra protections afforded by the USA Passport Protection
Plan. This means that your two year international warranty will run
concurrently with your Leica USA Passport three-year protection plan, to
which the USA Passport Plan adds a the third year of warranty coverage. You
can also buy a two-year extended warranty for the M7, which will then add
another two years of international warranty protection to the camera,
giving
you a total of 5 years of warranty protection.

Short version: Buy an M7 or M6TTL in the U.S., register with Leica USA, and
get three years of warranty coverage; buy an extended warranty, and see an
additional two years bringing the total to five years of warranty coverage.
(If you buy in other countries, they may have Passport-type plans; check
your local dealer for details.)

2) The MP is covered by a standard three year factory warranty, worldwide.
If you purchase from an authorized Leica dealer (and this really means that
you must purchase the MP from an authorized dealer who is selling a camera
that was authorized for sale in the country in which that dealer operates,
and authorized to that dealer), you will be able to register the camera
with
the agency or importer for that country (for instance, Leica USA, if you
buy
in the U.S., or whatever other authorized agencies in the country of
purchase), and the warranty will extend to five years of international
warranty. In the U.S., the USA Passport Protection Plan will be in force
for
the MP based on your having registered with Leica USA, for the first three
years, with the last two followed by the standard international warranty.
In
the U.S., you can purchase an additional extended warranty that will extend
the Leica MP warranty for yet another two years, bringing the total
warranty
protection for the MP up to a whopping 7 years, three of those under USA
Passport Protection coverage.

Short version: Buy an MP in the U.S., register with Leica USA, and get five
years of international warranty coverage, three of those under USA Passport
Protection Plan coverage. Purchase an extended warranty, and add another
two
years to your warranty coverage, for a total of seven years of warranty
coverage. (If you buy in other countries, they may have Passport-type
plans;
check your local dealer for details.)
