One solution is to convert images to an RGB image and embed an ICC 
profile into the JPEG.  The latest version of Internet Explorer on the 
Mac (and I'm assuming on the PC too) can read ICC profiles (provided 
you have the "Use ColorSync" box checked in the preferences) and will 
do the translation so that it looks the way it is supposed to on the 
receiving end.

Supposedly, this will work with greyscale images with an embedded gamma 
profile (1.8 or 2.2, or whatever), but I've had less success with those.
